The Benefits of Restorative Yoga
Restorative Yoga is often mistaken for Yin Yoga, but it’s an entirely different form of yoga. In Restorative Yoga, the primary purpose is to make you completely and utterly relax. Unlike Yin–where you are holding poses and still actively engaging muscles the entire time–in true Restorative Yoga, everyone uses props so that every single muscle in the body is relaxed and ready for a luxurious, deep state of meditation and rest that is powerful for both the mind, spirit, and body.
“Why is this a thing?” you may ask.
Restorative Yoga is a form of yoga that calms down your nervous system so completely that your entire body relaxes and you learn to calm your body and mind in deeper ways.
Restorative Yoga actively seeks to give your nervous system the chance to rest, repair, and rejuvenate itself.
Restorative Yoga helps people cope with stress, anxiety, trauma, grief, and depression–as well as people who need to recover from injuries or who have a chronic illness.
It’s the perfect way to unwind after a busy day, take time for yourself, and find renewed health benefits no matter what kind of background you come from or limitations you face.
However, Restorative Yoga is also for healthy, active people, too.
In the modern day, we live in a hectic state of mind where our nervous system is always on high alert, and learning to calm our nervous system down so that we achieve balance in the midst of chaos and busyness is vital to overall health.
For many who might not feel like the idea of complete relaxation is beneficial, or are obsessed with more active forms of yoga/fitness, Restorative Yoga can be a new challenge of learning to quiet the body and mind.
If you are into high intensity exercise, Restorative Yoga would be extremely beneficial to keep your body balanced so that it isn’t on overdrive, unnecessarily stressing your body in subtle ways that will impact you years down the road.
Balance is always key, and Restorative Yoga does help us all achieve balance in our active, strenuous lives.
